In today's article, we will continue with the exploration of perfume essences and make a classification of perfumes according to concentration. Read it and, at the end of the article, you will know exactly how you can choose the most persistent perfumes. Perfume concentrations play an important role in the identity of perfumes, but also their level of persistence. That's why in the following lines, we'll cover all types of perfume concentrations and help you understand what you'll get when you buy a new perfume. Come with us on a journey that will make you think of a beautiful scent and find out what you need to know about perfume classification!

What is the concentration of perfume?

With the seemingly endless variations of fragrances available today, it's understandable that people can become confused about their concentration levels. The concentration of perfume refers to its strength or persistence. The higher the concentration, the purer the perfume, therefore containing more aromatic oils and less alcohol.

By default, the higher the concentration of perfume oils, the greater the persistence of the perfume on the wearer's skin. Thus, in the world of perfumes, there is a clear division that indicates whether we will enjoy a perfume for hours or just for a few moments. And it is exactly this classification of perfumes that we are going to talk to you about in the following lines!

Classification of perfumes according to concentration

Perfume, Eau de parfum, eau de toilette, and eau de cologne, are certain terms you are familiar with. But can you understand their correct meaning and the differences between different types of perfumes? This classification determines the proportion of the composition of a perfume, in other words, the content of aromatic components in a quantity of concentrated alcohol.

The classification of perfumes is an excellent way to describe their strength, i.e. their lifespan, and in the following lines, you will be able to analyze the classification of perfumes according to concentration. One thing is certain: the higher the concentration of the perfume, the more persistent it will be.

Perfume extract (P)

Wondering what perfume extract is? Perfume extract or perfume in its pure form is by far the most persistent of perfumes. It has a concentration of up to 35-40%, has a dense appearance, and has a more oily consistency than the other types of perfumes. This is also due to the small amount of alcohol it contains. When applied, the perfume extract can stay on the skin for up to 24 hours.

Precisely for these reasons, the perfume extract has a higher price and is available in bottles that do not exceed 30 ml. In addition, not all perfume brands on the market also present a variant of perfume extract.

Eau de Parfum (EdP)

The classification of perfumes according to concentration continues with Eau de parfum or EdP (Eau de Parfum), as the abbreviation appears on the bottles. What is eau de parfum? Weaker than perfume extract, but still persistent, Eau de parfum can last up to 12 hours on skin or clothes, depending on the brand.

Eau de toilette (EdT)

Perhaps one of the most popular variants of perfumes on the market, from well-known brands, is toilet water, abbreviated as EdT (Eau de Toilette). The main reason for its popularity is its affordable price and the fact that all the big brands in the perfume industry produce it. Eau de toilette has a concentration of perfumed oils between 4% and 8%, being weaker in intensity than Eau de parfum.

The smell of Eau de Toilette lingers for up to four or five hours, so when deciding whether to choose Eau de Parfum or Eau de Toilette, you need to consider the persistence of each.

Eau de cologne (EdC)

In the perfume industry, there is also cologne, also known by the abbreviated name EdC (Eau de Cologne). But what is cologne? This type of perfume is among the least concentrated types of perfume, having an essential oil concentration between 3% and 5%. Eau de cologne has the highest amount of alcohol, which is the reason why its persistence is not more than three hours.

If we were to make a differentiation the type "cologne vs. eau de parfum", surely, you can already know which of these represents one of the most persistent perfumes. Of course, the prices are in favor of eau de cologne, but persistence will always be associated with Eau de parfum.

Fraîche eau de toilette

The lowest percentage of aromatic substances is found in the types of perfumes labeled Eau Fraîche. In this case, the content of essential oils is usually less than 3% and in this category, you can find light perfumes, ideal for home activities. That's right, Fraîche eau de toilette also gives a feeling of freshness, but the fragrance will certainly not be long-lasting.

The difference between eau de toilette and eau de parfum

Classifying perfumes according to concentration can help you easily make the most obvious distinctions between eau de toilette and eau de parfum. The terms EdT and EdP provide important clues regarding the intensity, longevity, and price of the perfume you choose.

The main difference between eau de parfum and eau de toilette is the concentration of the essence. In other words, EdP is a much stronger perfume than EdT, as the concentration of aromatic essences present in its formula is higher than the concentration of alcohol which, together with water, finalizes the formula of the perfume. A difference in aroma between the two types of perfumes can also be felt, as alcohol greatly influences the way we perceive the smell of perfume.

In a previous article where I was talking about the types of perfumes and how we choose perfumes according to the notes, I told you that the top notes are the dominant ones. Since the eau de toilette contains a small dose of aromatic oils, its smell fades after only a few hours. The top notes of the eau de toilette can be felt as intense immediately after application, but the high alcohol content will evaporate the perfume smell quite quickly.

On the other hand, Eau de parfum lasts much longer. Unlike eau de toilette, when the top notes of the Eau de parfum fade, they are replaced by the middle notes, followed by the warm and persistent base notes, often sweet or woody. As it is much more sophisticated and intense, Eau de parfum becomes the ideal option in terms of concentration.

Other types of perfumes with different concentrations

In addition to perfume extract, Eau de parfum, eau de toilette, cologne, or Fraîche eau de toilette, there are other types of beautifully smelling products. We invite you to discover them in the following lines!
  • Perfumed oil

A popular type of perfume is aromatic oil, which comes with several advantages. It has a pleasant smell on the skin, has a positive effect on the psyche, and does not irritate the sensitive and dry epidermis, given the oily texture and the lack of alcohol.
  • Body spray

Body spray is another type of perfume with a different concentration, recommended when you want to try a perfumed composition, which you can later choose also in the version of Eau de parfum or eau de toilette.
  • Eau de Soin

This type of perfume is a light eau de toilette. Eau de Soin is a moisturizing and perfumed cosmetic product, ideal for refreshing and lightly perfuming the skin, especially in the hot season.
  • Deodorant

Another type of perfume with a low concentration is deodorant. Ideal because it provides a long-lasting feeling of freshness, the deodorant is available on the market in the most diverse concentrations, both perfume and alcohol, leaving the skin fragrant.
  • Indoor fragrances

In addition to products that help you smell good, home fragrances are becoming more and more popular. It's not hard either, especially when you have a wide range of essential oil fragrances at your disposal. Aromatherapy is already well-known for its beneficial effects on health and mood, while professional fragrance diffusers manage to create an impressive atmosphere in any space. With IMKER professional home air fresheners, you will be able to fill your home with a seductive fragrance. And a stick-on room freshener can have the same effect on your home.
  • Car perfumes

Car perfumes are also in high demand, especially among those who spend a lot of time on the road. We have already told you about the most suitable scents for perfuming the car, so you can disperse scents from concentrated essential oils in your car with the help of a professional car air freshener. You can even opt for combinations of the best essential oils with a relaxing effect if you want to spend quality time behind the wheel of the car.

How to choose a perfume that lasts?

As you probably already knew, perfumes are composed of three basic elements - water, alcohol, and aromatic ingredients. The proportion of these elements will determine the strength of the perfume, its durability, and its price, equally. Thus, if you want to choose a perfume that lasts, it is advisable to carefully read the packaging of the product, because it indicates what type of perfume it is. The strength of the perfume, i.e. how long you and those around you will feel it, is determined by the ratio between its components.

As for body perfumes, I have already told you that by far the most persistent ones are perfume extract and Eau de parfum. In the case of home fragrances, IMKER recommends you choose essential oil fragrances from the AromaNatural collection or the GoodLife collection. With their help, you will create an incredible and long-lasting atmosphere in your home and car or in any other spaces where you spend your time.

Perfumes, although they may smell the same, differ quite a bit in concentration, which determines how long they last on the skin, clothes, or in the environment. We hope that this classification of perfumes by concentration has helped you understand which ones are the most persistent, and to be able to tell the difference between perfumes that do last and those whose longevity is not what you would have thought. We promise, however, that the essential oil perfumes from the IMKER store will conquer you irrevocably and you will be able to fully enjoy their charm!
